How to Prepare for a Baby?

11/3/2022

“HEAD DOWN IS JUST HALF THE STORY!” As Doulas, we understand the importance of thorough preparation for expectant parents to have a positive birthing experience.

Adequate preparation not only leads to easier and shorter labor but also helps you remain calm and relaxed throughout. We recognize that everyday life can be hectic, leaving little time for birth preparation ...

However, finding moments to focus on key elements can make a significant difference. Prioritize the following suggestions that align with your preferences:

  1. Take Time for Yourself: Consider taking a week off work before your due date to achieve a better state of mind, preparing both mentally and physically for the upcoming birth.
  2. Engage a Doula: Hiring a Doula offers comprehensive support during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. They can assist you in crafting a birth preference plan and provide essential information, even if you have limited time available.
  3. Communicate Your Preferences: It is crucial that your healthcare provider understands and supports your birth preferences. Address concerns such as the possibility of going past your due date before scheduling an induction. Remember, you have the power to choose your provider, even in the later stages of pregnancy. If you need guidance, your Doula can help you explore alternative options nearby.
  4. Nourish Your Body: Prioritize a healthy diet and stay hydrated by consuming ample fluids.
  5. Attend Informative Classes: Select at least one class that suits your preferences from the following options: i) Childbirth classes: Various options like Lamaze, spinning babies, or hypnobirthing are available; ii) Breastfeeding classes; iii) Infant Care classes (including CPR)
  6. Embrace Meditation and Prenatal Yoga: Consider incorporating meditation or prenatal yoga into your routine. Numerous meditation apps, such as Calm, Headspace, and Gentle Birth, can help release fear and provide mental strength during labor.
  7. Cultivate Oxytocin: Explore different breathing techniques with your partner to promote the release of oxytocin, the "love hormone."
  8. Utilize a Birthing Ball: Purchase a birthing ball and begin incorporating it into your routine. It aids in pelvic and tailbone flexibility, while regular stretching exercises can prove beneficial during labor. Starting the Miles Circuit around 37 weeks can also create more space for your baby and encourage optimal positioning.
  9. Seek Knowledge: If you enjoy reading, we recommend exploring our website for a selection of our favorite pregnancy, birthing, postpartum, and parenting books. Additionally, Evidence-Based Birth's website is an excellent resource for valuable information.
  10. Consider Specialized Support: Consult with your Doula or explore other specialized support services that may enhance your birth experience. Options include visiting a Massage Therapist for relaxation, connecting with a Pelvic Floor Therapist, or considering the Webster technique with a Chiropractor for pelvic alignment. Websites like www.icpa4kids.com can provide more information, or you can seek guidance from your Doula.

Realistically, attempting all ten suggestions may be overwhelming. Instead, aim to choose three to five items from the list that resonate with you and best prepare you for the upcoming birth of your baby.

After a career as ICU nurse and medical sales representative I followed my passion and became in 2018 a certified birth and postpartum Doula.

The birth of my children, 2 in hospital and 1 at home, was a memorable experience.
The first 2 took place in a hospital setting, with the first one being induced three weeks early due to medical reasons and the second arriving naturally around the due date. Our third child was born at home, offering another unique perspective on childbirth.

Hopefully the work of our wonderful team and these blogs also help you to realize a positive birthing experience.
