Benefits of a Doula for Expats

Happy pregnant expat couple
Happy pregnant expat couple
As an expatriate based in Washington DC, giving birth can feel daunting. Having a baby can be overwhelming in a new healthcare system. It can be difficult when you don't know the birthing practices.

Additionally, not being able to rely on family and dealing with cultural differences can add to the stress. Therefore, it is important to have the support you need. It's important to have the support you need ...
In many countries abroad giving birth is very different from the healthcare system in the US, as I have experienced. With my births In the Netherlands, midwives provided care, while obstetricians usually give care in the US.

In the Netherlands, midwives care for and support pregnant women during pregnancy, labor, and after giving birth. They are highly trained healthcare professionals who specialize in normal, low-risk pregnancies and childbirth.

In contrast, the US healthcare system leans more towards obstetrician-led care. Obstetricians are medical doctors who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Obstetrician-led care in the US places a greater emphasis on medical interventions and technology. This approach is particularly evident in the high rates of medical interventions during childbirth, such as inductions, epidurals, and cesarean sections.

In the Netherlands, new mothers receive home support for five days after giving birth as part of healthcare. In the US, parents need to organize this themselves. The differences in giving birth abroad and in one's home country do not indicate that one is better than the other. However, expats need to make more preparations when giving birth abroad due to the unfamiliar health system.

Like in this example, the health care system in many other countries will also differ from that in the US. As an expat that can be challenging.

That's where the benefits of having a doula at your birth come in.
Doulas are trained professionals who offer emotional and physical support to families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Here are some reasons why a doula can be beneficial for expats:

  1. Knowledge of the Healthcare System. Doulas know how the healthcare system works. This is helpful for expats new to the US. A doula can help you navigate the healthcare system and ensure you have the support you need during your birth.
  2. Cultural Sensitivity. Doulas receive training to work with families from diverse cultural backgrounds and comprehend the significance of cultural sensitivity. If you live abroad, a doula can assist you in expressing your birthing preferences and ensuring that they honor them.
  3. Emotional Support. Giving birth can be an emotional experience, especially for expatriates who are away from their families and familiar support systems. A doula provides emotional support and a listening ear, helping you feel more confident and comfortable during your birth.
  4. Physical Support. Doulas offer physical support during labor, such as massages, positioning, and breathing techniques, to help you manage pain and stay comfortable. This can be especially helpful for expatriates who are unfamiliar with the pain management options available in the USA.
  5. Evidence-Based Care. Doulas receive training in evidence-based care, which means they support you in making informed decisions about your birth. They can help you understand your options and ensure you receive the best possible care.

In conclusion, the presence of a doula can greatly enhance the birthing experience for expatriates in the US. They have expertise in healthcare. They also have cultural understanding. They provide emotional and physical support. They use effective care methods.
All of these contribute to a positive and empowering birth experience. With a doula, expats feel more confident and supported during this important life event.

After a career as ICU nurse and medical sales representative I followed my passion and became in 2018 a certified birth and postpartum Doula.

The birth of my children, 2 in hospital and 1 at home, was a memorable experience.
The first 2 took place in a hospital setting, with the first one being induced three weeks early due to medical reasons and the second arriving naturally around the due date. Our third child was born at home, offering another unique perspective on childbirth.

Hopefully the work of our wonderful team and these blogs also help you to realize a positive birthing experience.
